Former President Arthur Peter Mutharika has refused to answer questions from the graft busting body on the alleged abuse of his Tax Identification Pin Number (TIPN) should the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) decides to proceed with today’s slated interview.
Professor Mutharika disclosed this in a statement made public to the media.
Mutharika said he would exercise his right to remain silent.
Last week, ACB shifted the inquiry on the abuse of TPIN to July 27,2021.
And in a letter to the graft-bursting body, Professor Mutharika claims the ACB has not provided any explanation on the offences he committed; saying he already denied any involvement when Fiscal Police questioned him in August 2020.
“For the reasons given above, and out of courtesy to your institution, I will listen to your questions if you decide to proceed, but will exercise my right to remain silent,” said Mutharika
Last week, the Bureau said the interview would be conducted virtually as one way of observing COVID-19 prevention guidelines.
It is alleged that Professor Mutharika’s personal bodyguard, Norman Paulosi Chisale, and other business people benefited from his TPIN to import bags of cement from Zimbabwe, equipment and other materials duty-free.
